Why Don’t We Listen?

While there may be many reasons why women ignore their intuition and instead choose logic, obligation, and fear, there is no good reason to stuff this magical ally into the closet. We owe it to ourselves, and to all the women who follow in our footsteps, to bring intuition — truly a girl’s best friend — out in the open and into the conversation.

One of intuition’s biggest nemeses is our society. Although all men and women are born with an inner knowing, we are conditioned to shut it off and embrace societal norms and rational thinking. No matter that intuition has guided women for centuries to do everything from raise a child to save a village, Western society has taught us to accept only the visible, the tangible, instead of what we know, sense, and feel inside. Intuition has not been woven into our Western way of life — it’s not a topic for the dinner table, mainstream media, or mother-daughter chats. In a belief system in which facts are king and intuition is treated like a jester, intuition gets dismissed.

This inevitably leads us to make decisions based on obligation — another enemy of intuition. Regardless of what we may feel is the best course of action, when a sense of obligation is running the show, we listen to the “shoulds” over everything else. I should do this. I should do that. If I don’t do this, then that person will be angry, upset, and so on. I cringe to think about how many women live their lives according to the shoulds instead of their inner guiding voice. Our intuition doesn’t give a damn about the shoulds; she always makes finding what’s best for us her number one priority. Thank goodness! Contrary to what many of us have been brainwashed to believe, this doesn’t make her, or us, selfish. It makes her our ally on our mission to choose ME before WE, one who guides us to the actions that lead to loving and being ME.

The last, and possibly most destructive, force countering intuition that I will mention is fear. Nothing makes us less likely to follow our intuition, and does more damage to our lives, than this four-letter word. The sad truth is that we are far more likely to make decisions based on fear than on our inner knowing. Part of the problem is that, as unskilled listeners, we often confuse intuition’s voice with fear’s negative bantering. And when fear is in control, boy, can we make a mess of our lives. If we are fortunate, we learn to distinguish between the two voices and, over time, learn to trust intuition more than the nasty four-letter word.

In the past, I was an expert at steamrolling right over my intuition whenever I didn’t like what she had to say. At the time, I had no idea that I even had intuition, but I was aware I had feelings, thoughts, and dreams that seemed to be trying to get my attention.
